Lunch & Learn: Related to the Lenses of Learning
Originally presented at the Arkansas School-Based Therapy conference in 2022, Matt Sewell (Director of Special Programs, DESE) and Dr. Jeff Adams (State Systemic Improvement Plan Coordinator, DESE) will discuss the current state of special education in Arkansas and the state’s goals for inclusion for students with disabilities. Followed by the presentation, the audience will be given a chance to explore the provided resources. In order to earn a 1-hour certificate, viewers must complete and pass a final learning activity.
Objectives:
- Become familiar with the 2021 Arkansas Department of Education vision statement and its implications for special education.
- Acknowledge current special education dismissal rates.
- Identify state level supports available to public schools in Arkansas.
About Matt Sewall:
Matt Sewell, Ed.S. is the Director of Special Programs for the Arkansas Division of Elementary and Secondary Education’s Office of Special Education. He has a broad perspective of education, having served as a coach, special education teacher, building level administrator, and district level administrator before beginning his leadership position at DESE.
About Jeff Adams:
Jeff Adams, Ed.D. is the State Systemic Improvement Plan Coordinator for the Arkansas Division of Elementary and Secondary Education’s Office of Special Education. Jeff has a background in speech pathology and working with students with complex learning needs. Prior to his current role, Jeff served as a technical assistance provider with Easterseals Arkansas. He also instructs a course on severe disabilities at the university level.
