Description

The ECC is not a test, but a language sample scenario that can be used by a communication specialist to gather observational data on individuals who have been referred for assessment of their communication proficiency as a listener and/or speaker. The scenario is composed of 21 performance tesks. As the student performs these tasks, it is possible to obtain a systematic description of language processing, metalinguistic, and expressive language proficiencies and deficits. It should be classified as a performance assessment (descriptive and explanatory analysis), can be used as an alternative or in addition to a conversational language sample, and provides baseline performance data for development of IEP goals/objectives. It permits the simulation of a variety of listening and speaking demands found in academic, social, and employment contexts. The student is asked to shift rapidly from one use of language to another and to demonstrate listener proficiency when faced with a variety of language processing demands. Best used with students who demonstrate subtle but significant communication difficulties — language-learning problems, TBI, CVAs, ESL. 10-18 years Descriptive Simon Thinking Publications
