Literacy Skills for Students with Complex Learning Needs: Oral Language 3 hrs |
In partnership with Arkansas R.I.S.E. experts, Easterseals has created the first in a series of trainings to support special educators of students with complex learning needs as they work toward proficiency in implementing the Science of Reading. This first session focuses on explicit instruction to support Oral Language skills. Participants will gain a variety of strategies on the use of Augmentative and Alternative Communication and visual supports to engage all students in oral language routines. Visual Supports & Classroom Routines 3 hrs |
Visual supports and classroom routines are scaffolds used to increase student independence, reduce off task behavior, and provide support for processing information. Participants will learn how to maximize the use of visual supports and classroom routines in their classroom and how implementation can facilitate student achievement. This session pairs well with Literacy Skills for Students with Complex Learning Needs: Oral Language for a full-day training. |

Occupational Therapy in Arkansas Public Schools 3 hrs |
Occupational therapy (OT) practitioners contribute to educators’ understanding of the dynamic relationship between learners, educational content, instruction, activity demands, and the environment. Occupational therapy practitioners are increasingly solicited for their strengths in problem-solving, task analysis, and critical and flexible thinking. This professional learning opportunity is based, Guidance for Occupational Therapy in Arkansas Public Schools, which was published in 2020 and seeks to clarify the role and scope of practice for occupational therapy practitioners working in Arkansas public education settings. | HRS 1 |

Selective Mutism 3 hrs |
Selective Mutism is a relatively rare mental health (anxiety) disorder in which children who are talkative at home are unable to speak at school. This is often misinterpreted as an inability to speak at all, or willful refusal to speak. This session will review symptoms, briefly discuss similar disorders, and debunk myths associated with Selective Mutism. Participants will learn the school staff’s role in helping the child in the classroom, activities to reduce general anxiety in kids, and strategies for maintaining progress when the child moves to the next classroom or following holidays and breaks. |

Zoning Plans & Student Schedules 3 hr |
Successful teaching in a special education classroom requires detailed schedules and plans. Join us to learn more about what a zoning plan is and why you need one! We will take you through the step-by-step creation of a zoning plan so that you can write your own. We will walk through how to choose a visual schedule format and the steps for teaching students to use visual schedules. We will also share our tips and tricks for all things related to student schedules and leave you with some ideas for getting started! |
